TCARC Establishes ARES Group and Begins Task Book Process
In November 2025, the Tioga County Amateur Radio Club voted to formally establish a local Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) group.
The club has begun organizing leadership, identifying training opportunities, and initiating the ARES Task Book process for members interested in emergency communications support.
What is ARES?
ARES is a program of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) that provides trained volunteer amateur radio operators to support public safety agencies and community organizations during emergencies and public service events.
Our goal is to build a structured, well-trained team capable of supporting the community when communications matter most.
The ARES Task Book
The ARES Task Book documents training, experience, and demonstrated competencies for various ARES roles. It ensures volunteers are prepared to operate within an organized emergency response structure and follow established communications procedures.
Members interested in participating will work through training, exercises, and practical demonstrations as part of this process.
Training Resources
Members can begin exploring training opportunities through:
- FEMA Independent Study Courses
FEMA IS Training - ARRL Emergency Communications Training
ARRL Basic EmComm - Skywarn Storm Spotter Training
MetEd Skywarn Spotter Course
Additional details, local nets, and exercises will be announced as the TCARC ARES program develops.
Members interested in participating are encouraged to attend a meeting or contact the club for more information.
